The route begins in Martim Branco Village. After the last houses, cross the river and, taking the paths that traverse the floodplain, it is possible to follow the levada channels, contemplating a weir and blends of olive groves, strawberry trees and holm oaks. The old mills take us back to the era when maize and rye were ground to ensure “our daily bread”. Always ensconced within this remarkable natural heritage, the route ends in Almaceda, where the small riverside garden and beach provide a well-deserved rest.

Author’s recommendation

Keep an eye out for the landscape, both rugged and gentle, bare and forested. Take the opportunity to observe and listen to the fauna which you can sense along the entire way.

Tips and hints

- Maranho

- Tigelada

- Enchidos

- Cabrito no forno

- Filhós fintas

- Borrachões

- Biscoitos de azeite

Turn-by-turn directions

The route begins at the entrance of the village, in the urban network, and passes near the House of Arts and Crafts. After the last houses, cross the river on a small iron bridge and, taking the paths that traverse the floodplain, it is possible to follow the levada channels, contemplating a weir and blends of olive groves, strawberry trees and holm oaks. Further ahead, you once again cross the River on the Volta bridge, joining a new trail that follows a stream coming from a high weir. Going up about 30 metres, follow the Levada Nova until you reach the weir, where a path leads to a forest trail. Then you will come to a crossroads where a bridge will lead you to Porto da Vila. Following this trail, you will again see the riverside corridor of Almaceda river, where you will be surrounded by a landscape of small vegetable gardens, olive groves and traditional schist houses. Then it’s across the river again on some branches, leading you along the forest trail to Almaceda Village, whose riverside garden and river beach invite you to take a well-deserved rest. As an alternative to the main route a shorter variant was created (PR 2.1). After crossing the Volta bridge, follow the “Levada dos Moinhos" passing the former milling centre on the way to Martim Branco.
