moderate
Distance 9.7 km
The route starts in the forest of Casal da Lapa with a common initial and final section in order to transpose the spectacular dam wall of Santa Luzia, after which we have a circuit that allows us to visit Vidual de Cima area. As we leave the shores of the lake we find the beginning of the circuit possible to make in both directions and passing through Vidual de Cima village, its stream area and Poço do Caldeirão. Near this point there is an alternative route (PR 3.1 PPS) which shortens the route to Vidual de Cima.

Tips and hints
The quartzite outcrops of Santa Luzia are part of a wide quartz ridge that crosses the country from northwest to southwest and that deeply mark the landscape in places like Serra Buçaco, the ridges that border the Tagus river in Beira Baixa, the Marvão, and much closer Cabril do Ceira, Penedos de Góis and Penedos de Fajão. These outcrops are an important corridor of dispersal of flora and fauna species that here are able to find a privileged habitat. Santa Luzia boasts a diverse flora associated with a rocky habitat. The rocky cliffs and areas of low bushes surrounding Santa Luzia provide shelter, nesting and feeding to birds such as Crag Martin, Red-rumped Swallow, Blue Rock Thrush, Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush, Ortolan Bunting, Whitethroat, Long-eared Owl.

Turn-by-turn directions
The route leaves Casal da Lapa and goes towards the wall of the Santa Luzia dam, which is set in a huge quartz rock face of great beauty. The route crosses the dam wall and follows along the shores of the reservoir towards Vidual de Cima. When you leave the reservoir shores, the route splits in two. You continue on to your left and, further on, cross the tar road. Now you are at the top of Vidual de Cima, with a great view of the village below. You then begin your descent and, further on, you come to the ruins of a mill near the river. Continuing on, you will pass by several ruined watermills until you reach Poço do Caldeirão. There is a small waterfall here, an open invitation to take a dip in its crystal clear waters. A little further ahead, and before going down near the river, is the PR 3.1 PPS variant, which goes on to Vidual de Cima. Next to an old bridge, you can see the walls that flanked the river and even nowadays are still sometimes submerged by the reservoir waters. Next, climb up to Vidual de Cima. When you arrive there, you will cross paths with the PR 3.1 PPS variant again. Following the watercourse, you leave Vidual de Cima through an area of pinewoods. This path leads to the fork in the route. Now, you just have to follow the path you've taken so far. Go down to the banks of the reservoir banks, walking alongside water to the dam wall. Cross the dam wall and you’re in Casal da Lapa.
