Tips and hints
The range of the Serra da Açor mountains are a Natura network site that house a substantial population of Portuguese laurel (Prunus lusitanica subsp. Lusitanica). These mountains have the largest populations of Portuguese laurel in the country, and that of the Margaraça Forest is the most important. This is a relic species that has lingered in the forest since the Tertiary times. It is similar to the Laurissilva forest of Madeira which takes its name from the predominance of evergreen species similar to the laurel and Portuguese laurel. In Fajão the Portuguese laurel is associated with an abundant vegetation of oak and cork trees, as well as typical tree species: oaks and chestnut trees. This association of plants in a forest is extremely rare. In the quartzite outcrops there are more very rare species of flora.Janeiro de Baixo is part of Pampilhosa da Serra Municipality, Coimbra District. This village, which is part of the Schist Villages Network, was built on the right bank of the Zêzere River, making this a location of great beauty and some nostalgia. The village is surrounded by a harmonious set of mountains, rock faces and valleys, lagoons, rivers and streams that you will want to explore. In the centre of the village, the white tower of the parish church comes into view, framing the traditional houses, which underwent restoration.
