It starts by descending to the Monsenhor Nunes Pereira Building, then passes behind the GNR Building and connects to river Unhais, crossed by the historic Covilhã Bridge. Tips and hints

Defined as mountain territory, the county is located in the course of the mountain system Estrela-Açor. Halfway between Coimbra and Castelo Branco it is situated at the heart of Schist Villages. The range of the Serra da Açor mountains are a Natura network site that house a substantial population of Portuguese laurel. These mountains have the largest populations of Portuguese laurel in the country, and that of the Margaraça Forest is the most important. During the ice ages these forests, which are adapted to warm climates, almost disappeared from the continent. Small patches survived for millions of years in areas such as sheltered mountain valleys where they can still be found.

Turn-by-turn directions

This is a circular route beginning and ending in the Villa Pampilhosa Hotel. Begins down to building Monsignor Nunes Pereira, follow through the back of the Police Station building (GNR) and reach River Unhais which crossed by the ancestral, historical and liberating Covilhã Bridge. Already on the right shore of the river, gazing at the stunning trail ahead, one reaches the village of Malhadas, where one goes up until reaching the road which connects the town to the high part of the county. After a small steep walk we start becoming closer to the river beach of Pampilhosa da Serra. There we cross a pedestrian bridge located at the river beach, just near the bridge over River Unhais, and pass beside the Main Church door, reaching the square of the old city hall –Square Barão de Louredo, where one can now find the Municipal Museum. From here up to Saint Anthony is fairly quick. At the Calvary we take a left turn and walk through the town in a magical route for another 3 Kms. Arriving to the town we pass at the feet of “Cristo Redentor”. Following Paulo Piedade Street and taking a turn at Beco dos Cortinhais we arrive at the centre of the town able to notice the Villa Pampilhosa Hotel at the top of the hill.
