Circular route beginning and ending at the Cyclin'Portugal Centre of Fróia River Beach. Passing through the villages of Penafalcão, Alvito da Beira, Cerejeira, Casal da Ribeira, Carregais, Chão do Galego, Giesteiras Cimeiras, Figueira, Vale d’Urso, Proença-a-Nova, Amoreira, Casalinho, Atalaia, Pucariço, Porteleiros, Pedreira, Fróia and Oliveiras. There are several main points of interest along this route, like the municipality river beaches – Fróia, Alvito da Beira, Cerejeira – and the geological monument of ‘Portas do Almourão’ (also, a reference point of the route), as well as the nesting place of the resident colony of Griffns. Valleys and streams, full of life and color, is what this spectacular route offers. This is a very difficult route, so it is advisable a good physical preparation to do it.

Tips and hints

The Froia River Beach is one of the show-pieces of the municipality of Proença-a-Nova. The clear, crystalline water of the sources of the Froia river, the freshness and natural beauty of the space are the main features of this beach that has won several awards. The village of Figueira is a well-preserved schist village. Made up of streets, alleys, narrow quelhos and quelhas arranged in labyrinthine fashion, the core houses the communal wood oven, where bread is regularly baked. The Figueira stream, which circles the village, offers wide margins in certain places, used for subsistence farming, olive trees and grazing animals. These margins are beautifully structured by long hatchet schist stonewalls, in order to defeat the flow of the stream without degradation. Its width also facilitated movements between the cultivated fields and food and goods transportation. At Portas do Almourão, besides the beauty of the quartzite boulders torn by the river Ocreza, rare species of fauna and flora can be seen. Classified as a geomonument by UNESCO, this is an important area of nesting for such species as the bluebird, the otter, the griffon or the black stork. In flora, juniper and some carnivorous plants stand out.

Gastronomy: Maranho (goat stomach filled with goat meat mixture); wood-oven kid; plangaio (rice and pork stew); traditional smoked sausages; cabbage with breadcrumbs; tigelada da Cortiçada (baked custard pudding - Cortiçada style); fritters; coscoréis (pastries); broas de mel (pastries); honey; olive oil.
