Tips and hints
The schist and mud dwellings in the Aldeia do Xisto of Martim Branco are located in the Almaceda River Valley, between rocky outcrops and waterfalls, where natural heritage takes on particular relevance. Along the riverbank, common forest essences abound in almost the entire Beira Baixa: the pine, the cork oak, holm oak and olive tree, this last covering the most fertile valleys that surround Martim Branco.
The uncultivated land is covered in the woods that are characteristic of the region: broom, rosemary, gorse and furze. The fauna is varied: if you look and listen carefully, you may be blessed with visions of rare beauty of a fox, rabbit or hare, partridge, thrush, chaffinch, goldfinch, quail, cuckoo or lark. There's always a corner that will enchant you in this area that is in the hands of nature. Along the stream are still old mills where rye and corn were milled.
Gastronomy: maranho (goat stomach filled with goat meat mixture), tigelada (baked custard pudding - eggs, sugar, wheat flour, milk and cinnamon), regional smoked sausages, roast kid, fritters, borrachões, olive oil biscuits.
