The 18 km long Colcurinho Epic Climb begins at the charismatic Ponte das Três Entradas and ends at the top of Colcurinho, where the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Necessidade is located, a place of pilgrimage for many people in the region. The entire route develops with relatively moderate gradients (between 4 and 6 %), except in the final 2 kilometres, where it exceeds 10 %. Upon arrival at the top, the view rewards the efforts made, with one of the best panoramic views over Estrela Mountain and Piódão. The variety of scenery that it crosses is another characteristic of this Epic Climb. During the first half, the passages through Aldeia das Dez, Goulinho and Vale de Maceira interval with wooded paths. Less dense forestation makes it possible to see, from time to time, views over the Alvoco Valley. During the second half, the trees disappear and the view opens to a spectacular view over the main massifs of the Açor Mountain.

Author’s recommendation

Take your time in Aldeia das Dez, the “viewpoint village” of Aldeias do Xisto and be impressed by the built heritage and the landscapes that surround it.

Safety information

The tared pavement is in very good conditions, only getting worse in the final 2 km stretch. However, it is perfectly compatible with road bikes both up and down (although it is advisable to descend this section with caution). When crossing Aldeia das Dez and the Sanctuary of Vale de Maceira, the sett pavement runs for approximately 300 m.

Tips and hints

Along this route, you will come face-to-face with breathtaking landscapes and Aldeias do Xisto full of stories and traditions to be experienced:

- Três Entradas Bridge, located in the village of the same name, in the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital, is unique in the country. On the one hand, and as the denomination lets one guess, it presents derivations for three distinct directions; on the other hand, it where the rivers Alva and Alvôco meet;

- In Aldeia das Dez, admire the Mother Church’s interior, and enjoy the work of the old wood carvers, the views offered by the viewpoints around the village and the impressive architecture of the unfinished Casa da Obra. Enjoy the refined menu at the João Brandão restaurant. Do not leave without tasting the cavacas and the coscoréis traditional sweets;

- The Mount Colcurinho is located in Açor mountain range at 1242 meters and is part of the Parish of Aldeia das Dez. It is a place of rare beauty that comes from the vast horizon that extends to from Estrela to Caramulo and from Montemuro and Açor mountains. It's probably one of the best places to watch the sun rise and the sun set. At the top of the hill is the chapel of Nª Sr.ª das Necessidades, which is part of the sanctuary of Nª Sr.ª das Preces.

Gastronomy: goat stew, river fishes, greaves, roasted goat, arbutus berries grapa, sponge cake, rice pudding.

Turn-by-turn directions

Starting at the charismatic Ponte das Três Entradas and ending at the top of Colcurinho, where the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades is located, this route develops with relatively moderate gradients (between 4 and 6 %), except for the final 2 km, when you exits the 508 Municipal Road to the left onto a narrow road that surrounds the wind turbines and leads to the Chapel of Alto do Colcurinho. In this section, gradients rise significantly, exceeding 10 %, making it a particularly challenging path, often reminiscent of the well-known Angliru.
